Target training
What is the best way to practise hitting trebles?
Throw a set number of darts at each treble you use and count the hits, rather than throwing until one goes in. Nine darts each at the 20, 19, 18 and 17 is a common session. Thirty darts at a target gives you a hit rate worth comparing week to week.

Getting the board ready
Pick the targets that are costing you, throw the same number of darts at each, and find out how often you actually hit them. It is the drill every recommendation on the site sends you to, already set up for the target it found. Set up your own list on the board, or start from one of the sessions below.
What counts as a hit
Each target says what it takes. The one people argue about is the bull.
- A treble or a double
- Only that ring of that number.
- A single
- Either half of the single bed, and not the double or treble.
- A whole number
- Anything in that number: single, double or treble.
- Any double
- Any double on the board, and the bullseye. The 25 does not count.
- Any treble
- Any treble. Neither bull has one.
- The bulls
- Bull is the bullseye only, 25 is the outer ring only, and either bull takes both.
What the numbers say
At any double or any treble you choose which one to go for, so you can call it. A called dart is counted against that exact double as well as for the drill, which is how you find out whether you hit double 16 better than double 8. An uncalled dart is a hit or a miss and nothing more; the scorer never guesses which one you meant.
Questions
- How many darts should I throw at each target?
- Thirty, ten visits, is the default here, because thirty darts is the fewest the site will turn into a hit rate. Nine darts at each, three visits, is quicker and suits a warm-up; the rate then builds over a few sessions.
- Does the bull count as a double?
- Yes. The bullseye is the double bull, so it counts at any double, the same as it finishes a leg of 501. The 25 around it is a single and does not.
- Can I enter a visit total instead of each dart?
- Not in this drill. A total of 60 at the treble 20 could be one treble and two misses or three single 20s, which is one hit or none, so a total cannot say how many darts hit.
