Catch 40

How do you play Catch 40 darts?

Check out every number from 61 to 100 in turn, with two visits, six darts, at each. Finish in two darts for 3 points, three darts for 2, and four to six darts for 1. No finish scores nothing and you move on. The one exception is 99, which two darts cannot finish, so a three-dart 99 scores 3. The best possible score is 120.

Getting the board ready

The forty finishes you are most often left on after a good scoring visit, all of them, one after another, with points for getting out quickly. The board gives you the number, the darts you have left at it and the standard route, and the finish screen lists the numbers that got away, which is your practice list for next time.

How it is scored

Checked out Points
In two darts three darts for 99 3
In three darts 2
In four, five or six 1
Not finished and on to the next number 0

Darts are counted in visits. A bust ends its visit, so a finish with the first dart of your second visit is a four-dart finish even if the bust came on your first dart. That is how the drill counts it, and it is why a bust costs you points as well as the darts.

What the numbers say

The finish screen splits the forty into four bands, 61 to 70 up to 91 to 100, so you can see whether it is the bigger finishes that go wrong or all of them. Sign in and any number you miss in two of your last three sessions comes back as a list for checkout training, one visit at each, until it stops getting away.

Questions

Why does a three-dart 99 score 3 points?
Because 99 is the one number from 61 to 100 that two darts cannot finish. No single dart plus a double makes 99, so three darts is the quickest anyone can do it, and the quickest finish scores 3. Four to six darts at 99 scores 1, the same as any other number.
What is a good score in Catch 40?
The maximum is 120, three points on all forty numbers. DolfDarts, which publishes the game, puts about 40 as competent, over 60 as strong and 80 to 100 as elite. Compare yourself with your own last few sessions first: the missed finishes tell you more than the total.
What happens if you bust in Catch 40?
The visit ends and your score goes back to what it was at the start of it, as in 501. The darts you did not get to throw still count towards the six. Bust on the second dart and finish with the second dart of your next visit, and that is a five-dart finish worth 1 point.
Do you have to go in order from 61 to 100?
Going in order is the usual way, and the default here. Shuffled puts the forty numbers in a random order, drawn once when you start. The points are the same either way, so a shuffled session compares with an ordered one.
