The JDC Challenge
What is the JDC Challenge?
A 57-dart practice routine from the Junior Darts Corporation. You play Shanghai on 10 to 15, throw one dart at every double and the bull, then play Shanghai on 15 to 20. The three sections add up to one total, and the JDC's own sheet grades it by shirt colour, from White for a beginner to Black at 850 for county standard.
Play it now
The last doubles target is the bullseye, the double bull, as everywhere on this site. The 25 scores nothing there.

Any ring of the 10. Nothing else scores.
Getting the board ready
Trebles, doubles and the bull in one sitting, added up to a single number you can hold against a grade. Tap each dart as it lands. The board says which number or which double every dart is for, tells you when a Shanghai is one dart away, and marks the switch into the doubles and back out again. Tap any visit in the list to correct it.
How it is scored
| Section | Targets | Darts | Most you can score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai 10 to 15 | 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 | 3 at each | 1,050 |
| Doubles | D1 to D20, then the bull | 1 at each | 1,100 |
| Shanghai 15 to 20 | 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 | 3 at each | 1,230 |
The doubles section pays a flat 50 for any double hit. Double 1 is worth exactly as much as double 20, which makes the small doubles count for once. Each of the seven visits covers three different doubles, so the first is D1, D2 and D3 and the last is D19, D20 and the bull.
The 15 turns up in both Shanghai sections. That is how the sheet sets it out.
The JDC's published grades
The sheet's "average score indicator" gives each total a shirt colour. They are the JDC's grades; the finish screen here reads your total against them.
| Shirt | Standard | Total |
|---|---|---|
| White | Beginner | 0 to 149 |
| Purple | 150 to 299 | |
| Yellow | Improver | 300 to 449 |
| Green | League standard | 450 to 599 |
| Blue | League division 1 standard | 600 to 699 |
| Red | Super league standard | 700 to 849 |
| Black | County standard | 850 and over |
The sheet's bands share their end points (150 closes White and opens Purple), so each band here starts on its lower figure: 150 is Purple. Source: the JDC's routine sheet, archived copy.
Questions
- What are the rules of the JDC Challenge?
- Three sections, always in the same order. Shanghai on 10 to 15: three darts at each number, scoring only that number at its board value, with 100 extra for a single, a double and a treble of it in one visit. Then one dart at every double from 1 to 20 and one at the bull, 50 for each double hit and 100 for the bull. Then Shanghai again on 15 to 20. Add the three sections together for your total.
- What is a good JDC Challenge score?
- The JDC's own sheet grades it by shirt colour. Under 150 is White, the beginner grade. 450 is Green, league standard. 700 is Red, super league standard, and 850 or more is Black, county standard. Source: the JDC's routine sheet, archived copy
- How many darts is the JDC Challenge?
- Fifty-seven: eighteen in each Shanghai section and twenty-one in the doubles, one at each double and one at the bull. Some write-ups count 39 or 63. The sheet has one dart per double, which makes 57. Source: the JDC's routine sheet, archived copy
- What is the highest possible JDC Challenge score?
- It is 3,380. A Shanghai on every number from 10 to 15 is 1,050, every double and the bull is 1,100, and a Shanghai on every number from 15 to 20 is 1,230. On every one of those numbers a single, double and treble plus the bonus beats three trebles, so the Shanghai is always the best visit.
- Does the outer bull count in the JDC Challenge?
- The sheet only says "the bull". This scorer counts the bullseye alone by default, because it is the double bull and the last target of a doubles round. If the version you learned counted the 25 too, switch on "Either bull counts" before the first dart. Totals from the two versions are kept apart.
